Look at the domino effect of jobs lost:
School Teachers
Bus Drivers
Food Services/ Cafeteria Workers
Teachers Assistants & Special Education Staff
Music programs & Teachers
The Arts: Art & Drama Classes
Custodians
School Administration, Clerical & Support Staff members
Groundskeeper & Maintenance Crews
All the above, multiplied by six schools closing. So many talented teachers & dedicated workers are out of work. Once the local employment pool becomes flooded, it will be very hard for these people to find work here. A real tragedy, and I am connecting the dots- the military spending overshadows domestic needs. Crowded classrooms, unemployment, having to bus kids out of their own neighborhoods to attend school, simply because the government made wars their priority.

Twenty-six teachers will be laid off in the Palm Springs Unified School District.
In the Los Angeles School District, in 2009, a staggering 5,400 teachers were laid off. In 2010, another 6,300 teachers.
We recently met a hospital tech waiting for his take-away lunch at In-N-Out Burger, who said he has Masters in Education and can't find a teaching job.
Obama's economic recovery is a just another chapter in Bush's economic nightmare.
But at least the Nitwit in the White House and the O-Bots can point to Barry starting a third war, this one in Libya and a fourth war, a covert war in Yemen.
Is anyone else feeling like we're living through Bush's third term? I know I am.
and don't forget all the businesses surrounding the schools. less people stopping at the convenience stores and restaurants near the schools. with the schools empty, there will be more people hanging around who shouldn't be, making the neighborhoods less safe and driving the property values down.
Christopher~ Wow! That is a whole lot of unemployed teachers! They wind up in a bind too- when they apply for a job they are overqualified for, employers don;t want to hire them, because they figure they will not stick around.
Damned shame we will have people w Master's degrees flipping burgers & in debt for college costs for decades.
Nonnie- Had not even thought about the residual ripple effect. Kids have a harder time participating in extra curricular activities when the school is a bus ride away.
What a waste to have all those empty buildings.
I have to say, when Obama gave his SOTU address, he went on about excellence in education.... sounded great, but other locals also felt like which planet was he talking about, because schools here in the US are struggling,
when 60% of the budget goes to wars (hell, maybe more)... you can't help but realize that is money that should be funding teachers & schools.
