Tires 101-- Could save your life?

Gooooooood Morning Blogosphere!
Today's post is a kind of public service announcement about Tires.
Mr. Ramblings did buy a "newsed"- that's a new to us, used car to replace the vehicle that was totaled in November, because people drive like idiots on the freeway , thus causing multiple car wrecks.

People! Your driver's manual does NOT say to drive 1 foot from the bumper of the car in front of you @ high speeds on the freeway! The golden rule of driving is you can NOT drive faster than the car in front of you.

Anyway, the used car he bought has 2 new tires on it, and is in need of 2 new tires.

I remembered seeing the following news magazine piece about a cryptic code on tires-- that tells you the age of the tires. Bottom line is tires loose their umph & elasticity after so many years, even of they are brand new, never-been-used tires. Tires should not be more than 6 or 7 years old.... but even major stores- like Sears & Goodyear had new tires on the shelves that exceeded the tire pull date.... by up to 12 years. Whoah!
These tires have the potential to literally fall apart while driving.

Check it out & pass it on to your friends too.
Knowledge is power & in this case, safety too.

Hi,

Nice article, you may drive that fast provided you have great control and comfortable with it. Thanks for reminding us..

Good Weather - During daylight with good, dry roads and low traffic volume, you can ensure you're a safe distance from the car ahead of you by following the "three-second rule." The distance changes at different speeds. To determine the right following distance, first select a fixed object on the road ahead such as a sign, tree or overpass. When the vehicle ahead of you passes the object, slowly count "one one thousand, two one thousand, three one thousand." If you reach the object before completing the count, you're following too closely. Making sure there are three seconds between you and the car ahead gives you time and distance to respond to problems in the lane ahead of you.

Interestingly, SUV's, Pick up trucks & sports cars drive more aggressively than Family & Economy cars.

Back Off!
Respect your life & the lives of others by giving more space.

Besides tailgating is a moving violation that might get you a spendy ticket AND higher insurance rates.

Because I had so many close calls last winter I decided to buy new tires for my car. The guy at the tire store said they were still good but I did not think so. I slid more than I wanted to and I've been driving cars since I was 16 years old. I figured those tires just sucked and needed to be replaced.

Well it turns out the new tires I got sucked too. I am sliding on wet pavement for no reason. I'm not speeding or doing anything foolish. My hubby looked at these "new" tires and told me they were made in China. We were both disgusted. EVERYTHING is made in China for heaven's sake!!!

So he got me another set, these were made in Canada and are much, MUCH better.

It's good to know about checking the age of your tires though. Goddess knows everyone wants to ride your ass while driving and they are playing with cell phones, TV's, and whatever else, rather than paying attention and following the rules of the road.

Sounds like you are tired of tires too!

WE really should have a Federal Law w expirations pull dates, and make the date codes widespread public knowledge.

After reading this post, a friend had a neighbor who bought a brand new 2010 car.... with '06 tires.

Oy!

Technology truly has become completely integrated to our existence, and I think it is safe to say that we have passed the point of no return in our relationship with technology.

I don't mean this in a bad way, of course! Ethical concerns aside... I just hope that as the price of memory decreases, the possibility of uploading our brains onto a digital medium becomes a true reality. It's a fantasy that I daydream about every once in a while.
