Herons are so cool!!! Love the way they focus on their task (will fish for fish). We have some on a nearby golf course lake which I don't think is "stocked" so I wonder what they are looking into the water for.
Funny how Herons don't look that big, until they spread their wings & they have a huge wingspan- about 6 feet wide. The one in the pond w greenery growing in the water would take a kind of tiptoe step, dunk it's beak into the water, then repeat ~ they are interesting to watch.
Nonnie~ Do you have the pink variety- in your neck of the woods--flamingo's too (not the plastic yard version!).
hmmm ... bugs, or, maybe golf balls? pity the bird who swallows one of those. remember the Seinfeld episode where Kramer drove a golf ball into a whale's blow hole?
we have all kinds of birds here, but i don't think i've ever seen a pink heron. we don't see any flamingos either, except for where they're herded for people to gawk at them. we have egrets that are gorgeous, lots of ducks, cranes, ibises, and even egyptian geese (which are amazing).
There's one who's been hanging out at the pond in our neighborhood, finishing off the season's frogs. He's in the company of a single cormorant, who has fished out most of the catfish population.
Anyway, miss the OR coast quite profoundly. Someday I'll get that yurt built on my lot in Waldport... or so I hope.

they visit here pretty often, and they're fascinating to watch. so patient and so graceful.

Herons amaze me... esp. their necks.
