Dave Brubeck created a genre within a genre of music--West Coast jazz or progressive jazz.
Brubeck was the real deal- composer & performer.
I had the chance to see him live, He was in his 80-s @ the time. He could barely walk, shuffling slowly across the stage, but when his hands hit the piano keyboard, he was young again.
RIP Dave, I can only guess there is some kind of wonderful musical jam happening in the afterlife.
I remember back in the early 60's TIME mag included a promo vinyl of Dave Brubeck doing Take Five. My brother and I played that thing until it fell apart!
He was 91 ... a good long run producing some of the coolest jazz ever ... Take Five will forever be associated in my mind as my first exposure to non-lollipop music.
My fav Brubeck music story is when my son was high school age, he was on an extended road trip w the grandparents. He offered to share some of his music on CD's. They balked at first, thinking they would not share musical tastes... he gave them a Brubeck CD & generational music bliss was achieved!
