Play me I'm yours

Have you heard of this project?
They put pianos out in public places for people to play as an art installation.
Right now they have 60 pianos spread around NYC.

"In a collaboration between artist Luke Jerram and charitable organization Sing for Hope, 60 newly refurbished pianos were installed in public spaces throughout New York City.
Jerram has been bringing fleets of pianos to the parks, squares, bus stops, train stations, plazas, churches, post offices, zoos, ferries and bridges of major metropolises since 2008. Before Monday's installation, he had already installed 167 pianos in eight cities worldwide, including Sao Paulo, Brazil; Sydney, Australia; London, England; and Barcelona, Spain."

Yes, I saw a story about "Play me, I'm yours" pianos on the streets of NYC this week! For a nation that's shrinking almost daily from international influence and power, I think this is just one of many excellent alternatives for our former (and VERY brief) global domination aspirations.

As a former student of piano who, after seeing a dynamo playing the ivories one day sans music in one of our Junior College piano practice labs, I threw away my sheet music forever, thinking, "I can do that!" much to the chagrin of my parents who had invested in 3 and 1/2 years of lessons for me.

And I am reminded by annual flyers from the local university replacing their last years pianos and soliciting the sale of their "old" ones to anyone interested, I am anxious to propose such an idea to our own local progressive city council members to follow this example.

This is an *excellent idea* in the face of a collapsing *human civilization.*

(In the meantime, Dada is practicing his best repertoire of four chord Sixties oldies -- a brief array of which are soon to appear on Dada's Dally? ~pray not!)

  3. p.s. Fran: Congratulations on this post -- I'd thought of doing one on this myself, but one has to get awfully early to beat Ramblings to current happenings. Thanks for doing this. Good blog!

  4. i love this idea! there should be pianos all over the place. the first video is my favorite, especially watching the little children so filled with joy as they dances and twirled at the unexpected concerts. the best part was the little girl reaching out to the old man as though he was her grandpa instead of a stranger. music really does bring people together.

  5. What a great art project this is!
I had read in New York an artist sat down & played "the Entertainer", Linus & Lucy (the charlie brown theme song) & an Elton John song.
How nice to see people warming up to the piano for a free form music.... just kids banging on it randomly, to seasoned pros.
Dada, I too took piano lessons from a Nun no less- she had this metal extendo pointer that she used to whack my hands with when my fingers were not properly curved. No wonder I bailed on piano lessons & later took up -- electric guitar (no one whacked my fingers there- although it did take a while to build up enough callouses on my fingers so the metal strings were not painful to the finger tips.
The song Greensleeves is forever etched in my mind!

Nonnie~ The swirling kids & that embrace were sweet. Music brings people together & is a universal language.

Frankly-- it's nice to chat about something positive for a refreshing change.
