Oh Shit!

A vote for Obama is a vote for McCain?
Trouble with the damned electronic touch screen voting machines.

The Charleston Gazette reports

At least three early voters in Jackson County, West Virginia, had a hard time voting for candidates they want to win.

Virginia Matheney and Calvin Thomas said touch-screen machines in the county clerk's office in Ripley kept switching their votes from Democratic to Republican candidates.

"When I touched the screen for Barack Obama, the check mark moved from his box to the box indicating a vote for John McCain," said Matheney, who lives in Kenna.

When she reported the problem, she said, the poll worker in charge "responded that everything was all right. It was just that the screen was sensitive and I was touching the screen too hard. She instructed me to use only my fingernail."

Even after she began using her fingernail, Matheney said, the problem persisted.

When she tried to vote for candidates running for two open seats on the Supreme Court, the electronic machine canceled her second vote twice.

Isn't there a rule that if a voter reports that kind of problem & the pollworker verifies/reproduces the problem, they have to remove that machine from use? While we were waiting in line to early-vote in 2006, I saw the poll workers constantly putting white shrouds over various machines which were then carted off & replaced with another machine. A pollworker told me they always have these problems with early-votes!

ps, for some reason, the first few lines of your post is halways blocked out by the header photo!

White shrouds on malfunctioning machines? I'd be tempted to bring a sledgehammer & hit "any key" to proceed. Come on.... there should be NONE of this going on.
Is this McCain's strategy?

If the machines are not accurate, we need to get rid of them.

I would think there will be revolution in the streets if this becomes a stolen election.

Oregon does not have electronic touch screens, we have a paper ballot you draw lines on to make your vote. They CAN be recounted.

Thanks for telling me about the text issue... hmm first time I heard of the problem. Did that just happen since I changed the photo & color?

For your viewing pleasure here is the vanishing text....

What's blocking the first 3 lines is the photo you have up ... a very green forest scene. The upper part of the photo is fine, but then there is a big white space, and the lower part of the photo blocks the beginning of your post.

Hey, I'll try copying & emailing to you & see if you can see it. I do think it started since the SF bridge disappeared, but not sure.

*****but yeah, about those "shrouded voting machines" ... I asked the pollworker "why all the ghosts?" ... she had no sense of humor & told me they always have these problems with early voting. I guess the implication is early-voters are the guinea pigs for the REAL voters. When we voted in the primary, we did not early vote & everything ran smooth.

Actually the shrouded machines looked like E.T. when the kids threw a blanket over him to bicycle him around. Even more so when periodically a guy came out with a little rolling cart & wheeled away the malfunctioning machine & replaced it w/a new one.

I asked the registrar about this when I was showing E.K. the "practice machine" earlier this year. She claimed part of the problem was all the senior volunteer poll workers who don't really know what to do to recalibrate or fix a little glitch. We are a big retirement area. I suggested they recruit from the local college. She said they've tried but are unsuccessful. OK Obama college kids ... here is your mission ... volunteer as a poll worker!

Hey, it looks like you fixed the missing text -- by moving the pics over to the side? Looks good, Fran! I bet if you play around with it, you'll be able to get a pic up in the header again, if you want to. I was wondering if part of the problem was having the Obama widget, the countdown, at the top? I had to move my only active widget (a weather one) further down on the sidebar when it messed up my top space. Well, you can see I have no idea what I'm talking about. Good thing the world doesn't depend on my skills.

I appreciate you letting me know it was coming up botched on your end. Funny, it looked just fine on my computer.

Anyway.... take care Amiga & thanks for the techno update.
