Today is the 10 year anniversary of the death of Matthew Shepard, a gay student at the University of Wyoming, was beaten, robbed and left tied to a wooden fence post outside Laramie, Wyoming; he died five days later. His death helped awaken the nation to the persecution of homosexuals and their victimization as objects of hate crimes.
Matthew did not die in vein, his tragic death shined light on the need for support and unity.

I remember the day the story was announced in the media.
The brutality of Matthew's murder was stunning -- even in a nation like ours.
I can't believe it's been a decade since he was killed.
The ERASE HATE campaign was born of this tragedy.
The web site captures the essence of support.
It's hard for me to think how anyone could have such brutality within them. Brings sadness to the core.
But also a wake up call for us-- we have to keep working for diversity.
10-years! he was so beautiful, I sob just seeing his young face.
dk ~ I lit candle for him yesterday.
Make no mistake too who we vote for will greatly effect civil rights & diversity. I don't need to preach to the choir..... but seriously- we have GOT to get us a new regime.
Just a f***ing waste, that tragedy was. Had he lived, what good could he have done? What his murder left the world was something far less than what he may have been capable of accomplishing. While some good may have come from his death, I would rather have never known his name and have him be with his family and friends today.
Requiem in pacem, Matthew Shepard.
Mand: 10 years later it still stings, and still brings me to tears.
