Do you heart Art?

No wonder this 13 year old eventually evolved into a virtuoso violinist. Music is something that opens pathways in the brain that helps kids math scores. The band experience is a great social experience that not only teaches kids how to function in a group, but can help with lifelong social skills. Not all kids will be music virtuosos, but the arts are an important part of a well rounded education. When budgets get slashed, the arts are usually the first to get cut.
Support the arts at all levels of education in whatever way you can.

Artists and people who love the arts tend to think much more independntly than the general population. That's whywealthy and corporate interests want arts ed cut.

so many kids hate math, but they love baseball or cooking or building things. show them how important math is in figuring out stats and what they mean, in figuring out how to manipulate recipes, and in figuring out area and other measurements important in construction. it's amazing how much they actually want to learn once they realize that they can use the knowledge in things that are important and interesting to them.

Libhom- You make a good point, none of that creative thinking! Even Federal cuts in public school funding tend to most severely impact the arts, because they are programmed to teach to the test (when you have non teacher feds calling the shots on how education must be delivered).
Forget real learning & the joy of learning....
it's all about scores & percentages--another gem from the Shrub-- No child Left (with a ) behind.

Nonnie~ That falls under the joy of learning-- finding something you love or of great interest & using that as a springboard. But music - playing music opens brain pathways that help with math learning. I watched it happen w my own kid, after he started the band program.
Who knew playing trumpet would dramatically improve his math scores?

I would have any of those last three paintings proudly hanging on my wall. They all show extreme artistic intuition.
