Here comes the sun ~ Or You say you want a revolution

Lane Community College, located in Eugene, Oregon, received a $100,000 grant from EWEB to build a solar-powered electric vehicle charging station for students and the community. EWEB's Greenpower customers voted for the LCC project from among five local renewable energy and education projects.  A grid of solar panels was constructed that has 36 outlets to recharge plug-in electric or hybrid vehicles on the main LCC campus.
This charging station project has created opportunities for students to learn about how to install, repair and service the new solar array.  The college hopes that this solar vehicle charging station will lower the community's carbon footprint, will generate renewable energy, and will help the community learn more about the emerging technology of plug-in vehicles.
It's cool how solar charging is popping up all around Oregon State!  I am looking forward to the day where solar charing is considered ordinary is no longer a novelty.

Cafe' Yumm! gets Greener with Solar and EV Charging
10/6/2011On September 9th, Advanced Energy Systems, LLC. Broke ground on the Cafe' Yumm! restaurant located on Broadway Street in Eugene Oregon for construction of a 41.3kW Solar Facility. This unique PV generation project will feature a combination of rooftop solar on the restaurant itself, and construction of a covered parking structure with PV generation and EV charging stations. Cafe' Yumm! has been a leader in sustainability and this project will showcase the Broadway restaurant located near the University of Oregon with green power.
The EV charging facility will include both Level 1, and Level 2 chargers. The PV portion of the project will feature SolarWorld modules mounted on a Sun Storage structure and generate an estimated 45,000 killowatt hours of clean energy per year.

Charging stations really are popping up everywhere:

NEARBY CHARGING LOCATIONS

A local grocery/department store, Fred Meyer Kroger has joined in with a few charging stations in the parking lot as well:

The Nissan Leaf 100% electric, zero emissions vehicle, that gets 100 miles per charge, has partnered up with

SunPower® – The World's Standard for Solar™

SunPower Corporation produces a rooftop solar power system that generates clean, renewable energy that can power your home charger. we are working with this industry leader to bring solar power to Nissan LEAF™ owners.

Customers can install solar panels to run their home charging dock.

Makes Cents!

Nissan’s director of product planning, said the cost per mile is 4 cents if you figure gas is four bucks a gallon, electricity is 14 cents a kilowatt hour and you drive 15,000 miles a year. Compare that to the 13 cents a mile you’ll pay in a car that gets 30 mpg. Perry says the car will cost about 90 cents to charge if you plug it in off-peak.

The #'s mentioned above are assuming gas is $4 bucks a gallon. That may soon be history, as oil prices are soaring. CLICK HERE to go to the Leaf's home page, it gets a 5 star safety rating, and great info about the 5 passenger car, with "no tailpipe". By the way the 100 miles per charge works for about 90% of drivers daily commute mileage. Imagine never going to the gas station again!
It is priced @ $27,000 (includes $7500 in rebates), versus the Chevy Volt $40- $47,000 that gets approx 35 mpg on a charge, but has a back up gas engine. The $7500 in rebates apply here too, if offered in your area.
From Chevy Volt's web site:
Volt is unique among electric vehicles because you have two sources of energy. You have an electric source–a battery–that allows you to drive gas–free for an EPA–estimated 35 miles. And there's also an onboard gas generator that produces electricity so you can go up to a total of 375 additional miles on a full tank of gas.

 My    My problem with GM is, even after having to file for bankruptcy, & having taken a huge government bailout, they come back in a known difficult economy with a very expensive car. They made one of those epic bad decisions (like the people who sold the  Coke recipe, and those who told the Beatles boy/guitar bands were out, and the dozens of publishers who turned down J K Rowling, saying the Harry Potter story was too complex for kids. ) GM had the EV electric vehicle, lease only-- but decided to scrap them- even though people who drove them begged GM to keep the vehicles.
As a result, when gas topped $4 bucks a gallon, GM was top heavy w gas guzzling SUV's, and Toyota dealerships were struggling to have enough Prius Hybrids to sell.

If the Volt is really just an electric hybrid, it is still much more expensive then other hybrids- the Prius is getting 56 mpg city. Burning fossil fuel, granted, but $10 to $20 K less expensive. With GM's financial fall, they should have had a clue about the need for affordable vehicles. Now the Volt has a bursting into flames issue.
GM may have gotten bailed out financially, but no one can bail them out from their own stupidity.

And last, there are new Solar panel accessories for recharging electronic gizmos- cell phones, laptops, i pads, ipods etc...
Backpack w photo Voltaic solar panels! Wow! So students can walk campus  &  charge things up with ease & no carbon footprint.

The biggest deal, is that this is *people power driven*. As gas prices are more like highway robbery, and we know the CO2 emissions are doing damage to the only planet we have, people are voting with their dollars. Because really, are we going to wait around for politicians to agree to do something? Seems to me the only thing they agree upon is war funding. They show up for the ribbon cutting photo op, but by now we should have a solid infrastructure for solar powered electric care charging stations. Why have we not made the change to solar-- I suspect because there is not ongoing profit. because no other reasoning validates it. So cheers to the Stars who show up on the red carpet in a Prius & not a limo, and to these pioneers who are putting in charging stations.
Screw the government whose recent best move environmentally, is to jerry rig the Keystone pipeline to Texas, carting dirty tar sands oil, to make more pollution to refine, so we keep this oily addiction flowing. That and requiring 35.5 mpg standards by 2016. Notice how they project this "goal" further down the road & past their own term in office? Bush 2 did it & so did Obama. That way they can claim they "took action" without actually doing anything.
How much you want to bet the auto mfr's cry wolf hardship, and ask for an extension, because times are just too hard to make such changes.
Blood oil, environmental responsibility, price gouging, limited resource, and let's not forget the whole BP Deepwater oil well disaster- we have more than enough reasons to bail off the oil fix.
Essentially, don't wait for a leader-- be one.

Editorial Rant ~ If you'd like to scream, press 9

When we’re older we’ll complain about our feet. For now, we talk about what’s afoot.
One lunchtime was filled with intricate plans that Google is hatching to consolidate our online dossiers to better serve its advertisers. I wanted to look up the plans on the Internet, but then I wondered if that would only make things worse.
Another lunchtime (conversation) bemoaned a downtown bank’s shortened lobby hours, proclaimed on the still-locked door at 9:55 a.m.: “New Hours. Same Great Service.” I wondered two things as I waited those five minutes for the doors to open.
Will that Great Service spread over fewer hours be even Greater? And what hope is there for any of us when even bankers no longer keep bankers’ hours?
But a lunch last week asked the meta-question: “When did businesses stop trying to please me?”
My friend had just received a new credit card in the mail, and the billing cycle ends near the start of each month.
“I’m sure they know that people tend to pay their bills on the first, so if I send a check on the first, it’ll be late every month. They’ll change my billing cycle to whatever I want, but it’s one more phone call.”
He’s savvy and he’ll make that call, but how many others don’t — and then rack up late fees as a result?
I first noticed during the Clinton years that companies no longer expected competence from their employees. Compassion for frustrated customers had become a suitable substitute. Somebody must have figured out is was cheaper to teach workers to apologize than to give them the training and authority to do their jobs well.
When I went to school, students who wanted to be wealthy had really only two choices: law or medicine. Banking wasn’t on the list. In the 1990s, investment banking suddenly became a lucrative career. But how?
Computers began to add new pathways to wealth. Making a small amount of money over and over had been tedious and time-consuming. Just ask any owner of a coin laundry.
Computers changed the equation. A tiny task can be repeated a million times in an instant. Day traders comb the stock exchanges, trolling for tiny anomalies. They might buy a stock and sell it again on the same day and make millions.
My friend’s credit card company is doing the same. They send introductory packets to thousands of new customers every day. They know how many will ask for a change in their billing cycle. They know how likely their profits will rise on those who don’t. They can run those numbers. In this way, they know something you don’t know. They know how many of their customers are just like you.
Google or Facebook may know more about me than I’d like to believe. Target recently made the news by figuring out from buying patterns that a teenager was pregnant, sending her maternity clothing coupons before her father had been told.
A single customer no longer stands for every other customer. Now, the reverse is true. Broad patterns of customer preferences can be modeled and tested, reliably predicting what you want or what you’ll stand for.
All this talk of who stands for what is making my feet hurt.
Don Kahle

Love the bankers hours comment. The philosophy too of Same Great Service-- cheating customers on available hours & calling it "great".
I'll add to the list of discontent automated phone systems. Oh the hell it brings into our lives.
Sometimes the initial menu has several different categories. If you are lucky, the option you want will be in the first few, but other times you have to slog through to option #7, worse is if none of the offerings are what you want, but they don't offer anything else- like "press 8 if you'd like to speak with a human". Some systems will respond if you punch "O" & it will take you to a person, but some companies were on to that tactic, so if you choose "O", it will reprimand you "that is not a valid option".
I particularly hate the interactive versions that want you to respond with words. Like you will somehow think you are talking with a person, because you are conversing with a robotic voice. A higher level of annoyance, but it sort of works when it is a Yes or No answer. After that it can devolve into the abys, after several rounds of questions, you respond again, and the robo voice says " I do not understand your answer". Game over.
Some evil mastermind cooked this up, you've lost several minutes of your life you will never get back, and now it is telling you, essentially- it is all for naught. Some of these systems will respond to (yelling) the words "Customer Service.", even though it has not been presented as an option. It has been programmed to recognize you are probably an angry human who is not going to  go along with this automated "service'" charade.
Then there are the numbers games...please enter your 16 digit number, followed by the pound sign. After you do your finger acrobatics, and if you are lucky, eventually, you are speaking with an actual human - the first thing they ask you is to repeat the number you already punched in. If they have to transfer the call, the next operator will grill you for the same info, by now you are thinking, damn, I just want one question answered, and this is taking 1/2 the frigging day.

The oxymoronic award goes to those who require you to enter a password. If  you are calling for password assistance, you're screwed. The robo voice will escalate, I did not hear your response... or a kind of rude toned Are you still there? No! I'm already gone off to look for another company.
A new trend, in an ever increasing level of annoyance, is to send follow up e mails for you to give feedback. I had a multiple issue situation w the phone company. The outside line was static-y & needed repair, we thought the router died & needed tech assistance, we wanted to change to a less expensive plan for the exact same service. The sales lady misquoted the price (even after I said this price includes taxes & fees?), and she added their voicemail, which overrode our home VM system, so callers would get a "this voicemail system is not yet activated" message. Good thing our friends said WTF w the weird message, or we would have had no idea.
Never mind that when she asked what code access # we wanted to use for their voicemail system, I told her very clearly "we do not want your voicemail service", She partially activated it anyway.
Fixing this issue took 8 calls. The first call said I must call again the next day during business hours (no e mail or way for them to communicate amongst themselves?), but she would change it to not kick in till 8 rings in the meantime. Did not happen.
 The first guy said it will be done w/i 2 hours. 3 hours later the next person said done by 5 pm.... (5 hours later). The next person said don't know why they told me that, it can take up to 24 hours. When my head was about to explode, I asked to speak to a supervisor. "you're not going to like this answer" said the clerk. In order to speak with a supervisor, I need to pass on your information, and they will respond within 48 hours. This was a Thursday.
Let me guess, they are not in on weekends, right?
Yes Ma'am- not here on weekends. Have one contact me anyway. OK (never happened).
I try to forget all the rest. Eventually they got it together. The service repair guy deserves a raise, he showed up the next day, on time, worked on the line for 25 minutes & got it done. The sales clerk who pretty much got everything wrong, should be fired or on probation. Oh yes, Century Link bought out Qwest & things have not been the same. For all their super fast, high tech, 4G, rule the world propaganda.... a person could die waiting for one supervisor to return a call. I' d give them a piece of my mind, but robots don't care. I did have fun filling out one of the 4 feedback e mails they sent me.  I used honest words like "Hellish" & spoke for the need to have options to speak with a human. I consolidated all my thoughts into responding to 1 feedback solicitation.
They are probably very happy that I did not fill them all out- if anyone even reads them, they will surmise I was not a happy camper regarding robotic customer service.

Venescia? This is Ernestine... I think the phone company has pissed off their customers so much, they are going to send a burly serviceman to our office! (snort!) The next really angry customer to call will be ditched into that newfangled robotic voice system hell. That'll teach them not to mess with ME!

spread the word to end the word

This is a campaign to enlighten us all to the negative and derogatory term "retarded". At some point it was the medically correct term for someone with an intellectual disability- mental retardation. But the word morphed into slang- to say something or worse- someone "was retarded" for doing something stupid, or used as a put down "what a retard", had become commonplace.
Some threads I read launched into a tirade about going overboard with being Politically correct, or rants about banning words. But if your loved one has a disability, it is personally offensive, and stereotyping.
One can have a multitude of disabilities, and still excel at  number of things, one of those being compassion. The term retarded comes with a stigma of negative assumptions.

Because, like ripples in a pond, we can make the change happen.

Today is the official day to spread the word to end the word.

" Every time Ellen Seidman hears the word "retarded," she worries for her 9-year-old son, Max, who has cerebral palsy. She wonders if people will ever respect him, or see him as an equal, if they associate that word with people like him, who have intellectual disabilities.

"I'm not saying that anyone who uses the word flippantly has something against people with special needs," said Seidman, a magazine editor and mom blogger. "But it is a demeaning word even if it's meant as a joke, because it spreads the idea that people who are cognitively impaired are either stupid or losers."

Seidman is not alone in her desire to see "the R-word" go the way of racial slurs once considered acceptable. More than 250,000 people have pledged online to take part in the Special Olympics' campaign to "spread the word to end the word." Many of them are expected to participate in Wednesday's annual day of action through pledge drives, fundraisers and individual acts to raise awareness."

Here is the video she created:

"It starts with thinking about a word, but I want it to translate into the way people treat others with disabilities," she said. "It's about helping to see people with cognitive impairments as great people, as competent people, as people who can contribute in so many ways to our society."
Launched by two college students in 2009, the campaign is gaining traction not only among the citizenry, but in the halls of government and the medical community. President Obama passed Rosa's Law in 2010, which eliminates the use of the words "retarded" and "retardation" in federal health, education and labor laws.
The bill changed the terms "mental retardation" to "intellectual disability" and "mentally retarded individual" to "individual with an intellectual disability." This shift made the terms more consistent with language already used by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the United Nations, and the White House. Currently, 43 states have passed similar legislation or have similar bills pending, according to the Special Olympics.

 What if you or a family member - like your own child, had such an impairment?
 Any words chosen will be a label of sorts, but it is only to recognize a real medical condition, not a put down.
Now kids with various intellectual disabilities are often mainstreamed into regular classes.  There are many people with intellectual disabilities who went on to do great things:

• Albert Einstein: Einstein was unable to talk until he was four years old and could not read until he was
nine. Teachers considered him to be mentally deficient, unsociable and a dreamer.
He failed the entrance examination for college. He would become arguably the
world’s most famous physicist after developing the theory of relativity.

• People diagnosed with learning disabilities:

Tom Cruise
President John F. Kennedy
Henry Ford (of the Ford motor company)
Army General George Patton
Charles Schwab (Brokerage)
Nobel Prize winner for Literature George Bernard Shaw
John Forbes Nash is an Noble laureate American mathematician (featured in the film A Beautiful Mind)

I think it's great that there is this concerted effort to "enlighten up" to raise our consciousness, and level of compassion.

The Koch brothers must be happy

Redistricting was a grand scheme to be able to manipulate voting blocks.
Dennis Kuchinich has lost his house seat.
Redistricting caused him to have to run against Marcy Kaptur, both of them champions for the people.

Don't get me wrong, Marcy Kaptur is a gem & a fighter:

But it is a loss to have Kucinich out of congress.

Meanwhile in the Republican primary, Samuel Wurzelbacher, who gained fame after John McCain's presidential campaign promoted him as "Joe the Plumber," defeated auctioneer Steve Kraus in Ohio's Ninth Congressional District, which leans Democratic.
Ms. Kaptur, 65 years old, who came to Congress in 1983, is the longest-serving female member of the House. She is a traditional working-class Catholic Democrat, strongly opposed to free-trade agreements and holding conservative views on abortion.
If she wins in November, Ms. Kaptur would be in line to serve as the top Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee, which controls federal spending, though other Democrats could challenge her for the post.
Mr. Kucinich, also 65, is a flashier breed of Democrat. At age 31, he served as the "boy mayor of Cleveland" and won election to the House in 1996. A staunch liberal who ran for president in 2004 and 2008, he's also a proud vegan who advocates the creation of a U.S. Department of Peace.  - From Politics

'Two districts were eliminated. Kaptur should have an easy time defeating Joe the Plumber. There are rumors that Kucinich may go after a vacant congressional seat in Washington state.

Romney: Ignorance is bliss

Romney was not "heckled" over fracking, just because he is not aware of drinking water bursting into flames, does not mean that it "ain't so".

Romney's condescending response"don't get so upset about it Madam, it's not worth getting angry about".
Mitt explains they just use water & chemicals to get the natural gas, like he's reading from a children's book... once upon a time. But the fact is real people have had fracking done in their area, and it uses so much water, it can dry up wells (try running a farm without water), and or the chemicals used taint the water- leaving locals with carcinogenic water. When you are not wealthy, and your local water either goes away or unsafe, I''d say it IS worth getting upset about.  Because most people can't afford to just up and move, or in Mitt's case, move to another one of your many estates. Good luck selling a place w toxic water flowing from the tap. It's also questionable if fracking may be the root cause of recent earthquake activity on the east coast, although not (yet) proven.

Don't worry folks, Mitt is "not aware" of the problem, so everything is just fine-
"it's gone on for decades, and is regulated state by state"

Well, at least he offers voters an alternative, if you don't want fracked flaming toxic water or Canadian tar sands oil, vote for Barack Obama.

This video is worth a listen:

Problem is Obama is not solid on fracking or Canadian tar sands oil either.

There was another news clip where the media used the term "heckled" when a woman asked him:

"Do you think it's patriotic to stash your money in the Cayman Islands?"

She was asking a legitimate question. Honestly, when a very wealthy person wants to run for president, it does speak to his ethics, when the potential candidate essentially evaded taxes, by moving his money out of the country-- especially at a time when this country is struggling financially.
Even if it is "legal" or he found a loophole, he is screwing the country of much needed tax revenues.

De stress w ancient Chinese therapy

I came across this ancient de stressor. I was looking for hand therapy items, and found baoding balls (pronounced bo-ding), they are also known as Chinese Exercise Balls, Chinese Therapy Balls, Chinese Stress Balls, and Chinese Health Balls are believed to have originated in Baoding, China, a small town in the Heibei province, during the reign of the Ming Dynasty.

Looking for a good hand and finger exercise? Play a musical instrument? Baoding Balls and Chinese exercise balls will build up your finger coordination and hand strength. You can practice  almost anywhere when you are watching tv, bored, or just waiting around.

Dr. Oz recommends them as well!

Although he does not show how they are actually used:

Baoding balls are usually used for exercise and meditation, but are also good when employed for medical reasons. To use them for exercise, place two Baoding balls within your palm then rotate them clockwise and counterclockwise. Gravity will help you keep on controlling the balls. There are many exercises possible. One is trying to not to let the balls touch one another during manipulation, as advanced users do. Such users of Baoding balls can frequently use more than two balls at one time. Manipulating the balls in your hand not only exercises hand muscles, but forearm and shoulder muscles as well.

Alternative Medicine advocates believe that the balls are beneficial for medical reasons when they touch pressure points or acupuncture points found all over the hand. A practitioner of western medicine would find it hard to believe that such balls have health benefits, but it helps to realize that practitioners of Chinese medicine believe that all bodily systems are linked to one another. Chinese medicine advocates believe one should not just treat symptoms but rather should examine the root cause of the symptoms. In connection, Baoding balls could be prescribed by a Chinese doctor with a patient whose internal energy or Qi has stagnated and thus, caused the problems for the patient.

As a beginner you should first start off with two balls that are not too big (average adult hand 40 mm, smaller hand 35mm). Practice rotating them in your hand. At first you will probably be clanking the balls together just trying to get them moving. Concentrate on rotating the balls smoothly so they are not hitting each other. Start slowly and get faster as you improve. Once you can handle the smaller balls, move on to bigger exercise balls.

* I am post op w carpal tunnel surgeries (both hands!) and have tried 35- 55mm sizes, the 40mm feels most comfortable. Reversing the direction is more difficult than it looks! I am a total beginner, and can only use the baoding balls touching together.  I use them every day, while watching tv or on the phone, while reading, etc & my physical therapist said they are great for using the hand motion needed to heal the nerve & tone the muscles, tendons & ligaments.

Because I have sensitive skin, I decided to avoid any of the decorated or cloisonne balls, as paints or metals could irritate, be toxic, and can chip if you use the balls touching together.

I do NOT recommend the glass boding balls because the ones I got were very flawed with uneven, pitted, and not totally smooth surfaces, like I envisioned glass to be.

Although the Banded Onyx baoding balls are smooth & nice. (in the solid baoding ball category & are $8.95 for 38mm) (Shown to the left)

I chose the stainless steel/chrome type, because as a beginner, you can drop them w/o breaking... they also have beautiful gemstone baoding balls that cost 2x as much or more & they are heavier.
Sodalite shown below:

Many come with a cool silk storage box w latch (included w price), or a velour pouch & the steel baoding balls start at $7.95 plus shipping.

They also have a bargain bin $2.98 of 38 mm baoding balls, but you get what you get, you don't choose the style.

Found these at: Baoding ball website

Chinese medicine practitioners believe that the body's Qi ("chi") flows through pathways known as meridians.  There are 12 meridians in the body and each is related to a particular organ.  For thousands of years, acupuncture doctors would use needles inserted into a person's meridian to affect the flow of the internal energy.  The acupuncture doctors have studied which organs are connected to Yin energy or to Yang energy and what points of the body they must stimulate to treat the condition.  By the same theory, using pressure (Acupressure) can also stimulate the meridians through massage.

In your hand, there are several meridians and acupressure points connected to your organs.  By using Baoding Balls in your hands, these points can be stimulated to affect the energy flow of your organs.  To increase Yang energy, the balls should be rotated quickly to increase the temperature and in a clockwise directly.  To increase Yin energy, they should be rotated slowly and in a counter-clockwise directly.

Using Baoding Balls in this way to affect the body's energy has given them the name of Chinese Health Balls.  However, practice with these balls has health benefits in addition to balancing the flow of Qi.  Regular use of the health balls will improve and stimulate the circulation of the fingers.  The exercise will also strengthen the muscles of your hands and fingers.

If you are suffering from the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome or feel the onset of the condition, using Baoding Balls can help manage your condition.  Rotating the balls will stretch out the tendons and warm up the hands and wrist.  Regularly performing short warming up exercises  for the wrist before engaging in activities with intensive or long periods of wrist activity can prevent and avoid the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome.

Not tonight- I've got a transvaginal headache

Or maybe the silver lining is one less republican....

Ugh! This guy thinks he's a comedian. Theme music, really? I hope his wife holds that aspirin between her knees with superglue.
What other workplace would tolerate this kind of out of line chatter? Since the State is required to keep records & transcripts of what is said in legislative sessions, Albo has on the official record, he's not getting any because his wife is revolted by his transvaginal legislating.

He's not owed an apology.... he owes an apology!

the thread that follows....

 Insertion of an object into a woman's vagina without her consent is rape as defined by Virginia statute. The law regarding transvaginal ultrasounds also said the person being "probed" didn't have the right to refuse. Period. That's state mandated rape, bucko.

Hypocritical Republican lawmaker complains when his wife uses abstinence as a form of birth control and is not mature enough to say the word vaginal when speaking about a law concerning women's vaginas.

Wait, we pay these people with our tax dollars to stand around a talk like this?

Would his little story have been HR approved in the private sector?

He can vote for a bill but he can't say one of it's stipulations.

New Rule: You need to be able to say the word "vagina" before you try to tell others what to do with it.

If you live in Virginia and can say the word Virginia, you can say the word Vagina.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The average woman is fertile from about age 12 to age 51. That's 39 years of potential child bearing, or maybe an average of 35 years of her life should could get pregnant.
Let's face it, most people- even this joker Albo-, do not have intercourse for the sole purpose of procreation- or making babies  The only reason the issue of birth control is being kicked around is because the men who think they are entitled to be the deciders, have zero chance of ever being pregnant, or birthing a child.
mocking the leg
The goofy leg pose Angelina Jolie trademarked @ the Oscars,  has been a photoshoppers delight
