Ok, well it started with us deciding to go to the less expensive matinee early showing, because it's all about anti capitalism- right?
As we stood in line, we overheard the man at the ticket window say "One ticket for Michael".
We had to laugh-- Moore was now a famous filmmaker & the clerk knew what he was talking about- he was on a first name basis!
I don't want to give away too much about the film, for those who have not seen it yet, but will say this--
Michael Moore's film making style is maturing. No longer does he feel he must narrate the hell out of a topic.
In a documentary, you really want the message to unfold itself.
The other thing he does here is shed light, and gives a subtle-as-a-freight-train message-- that those who are not the ultra wealthy elite have an equal vote, and could band together for change. This is their fear. We who are getting pushed around need to know that.
The only thing missing was a tie in about the health industry.... because the for profit model we have is certainly a prime example of capitalism at it's worst. But yes, he dedicated an entire film to that topic- Sicko.
Once you see the fim, you will know what the term "Dead Peasants" is all about.
Yes, Wall Street is a crime scene, and now we have it on film!
This film made me both laugh out loud AND brought me to tears.
Well done, Michael.
Sweet-friggin-Jaysus..Wally World does what???????
That is disgusting..on every single level.
Can't wait to buy the DVD..I have all of his films. Bless him for talking truth to power.
That video clip was a part of the movie.
In the final credits (stick around for those, little quotes are thrown in) they did mention that Wal Mart no longer buys "Dead Peasant" insurance policies, but there is a long list of big companies that still do.
I'm guessing the only reason Wal Mart does not continue to buy such policies, is someone nailed them on it.
How sick is that practice???
It's like George Potter with an enhanced evil streak.
Moore nailed it.
I am going to see the film tomorrow-er, today actually. And I will buy it when it comes out on DVD too because I have all his work as well.
My son lost his job and after months and months of searching he got a job at Wally world--and no one was happy about that, especially him.
Lib~ It's an eye opener for sure.
As for your son.... W Mart gets a lot of bad press because they have been highly exploitative,
but there are lots of other companies that are doing this stuff & probably just glad W Mart is taking the heat.
The corporate world of Capitalism is largely cruel greedy, & heartless. Sorry to say, although, there were a few examples of corporations doing it fairly.... but they are far & few between.
I hope to see it soon!
I didn't know about the Dead Peasant concept, but I am familiar with the Key Executive life insurance policies taken out by corporations to pay them big bucks if a key executive dies while working for them. The concept is that those execs have such specialized skills that the corp cannot easily replace them without shelling out a bunch of money to bring someone else up to par.
How does that apply to a store clerk at W-Mart? I have no clue, just questions...
Like, how much worse could the avg W-Mart clerk do in effing up the economy than many of the big corp's Key Execs did and are still doing?
(oops, cut myself off, hit publish vs preview) ...
a conspiracy question: is it beyond the realm of possibility that a failing corp that has taken out death policies on many of their employees might actually find themselves the beneficiary of a "lucky" mass employee "accident"?
I don;t know..... brings a whole new perspective to the concept of *working people to death*.
I guess the formula is the peasants are paid so low, that they can recoup the cost should they die. Plus, according to the film the High Cost of Low prices, Wal Mart paid low enough wages & had health care insurance costs so high, the average employee could not afford the company health insurance.
I bet some bean counter got a fat bonus for offering health insurance, making it unaffordable, and taking out hidden insurance, so when they die from lack of health care, the company scores some cash anyway. Win win for the corporation.... while the low income family is literally stuck with medical bills & funeral costs.
Capitalism at it;s worst.
