What I'm hearing is, there will be a boycott of Utah, the Sundance Film Festival, their ski industry and a concerted effort to get Delta Airlines to relocate their Salt Lake hub.

The radical, Christian lunatics, AKA, the Mormons, could also lose their tax exempt status.

I hope it was worth it.

I thought the Sundance Film festival was highly progressive- even though it happens to be located in Utah ?????

The tax exempt revocation seems fair, since some Mormons are using churches for hateful and discriminatory political activity.

It looks like Canada's gay marriage laws & protections were brought about by lawsuits over equal rights.

Fran,

The point is, how will Robert Redford, a life-long liberal and progressive, be able to ignore the antics of the Mormons in Utah and hold his film festival?

Let alone, attract Hollywood to attend?

I guess I see it as a *liberal stronghold* in Utah.... not throwing out the baby with the bathwater.

Not everyone in Utah is of this particular Morman mindset.

If the Sundance film festival promotes diversity, & equality, I favor supporting their efforts. They are carrying the torch with the flicker & flame of equality, I don't want to see that extinguished- especially in Utah.

That's my opinion & perspective, not saying you or anyone else has to agree.

There is hope this will happen with the new regime.

Not Sundance, Christopher! It's located in one of our only liberal areas in UT. Park City/Summit county consistently vote dem, not repub like the rest of the blasted state. It's not even a very religious area, which is saying a lot if you've ever visted this theocracy. Redford & Sundance aren't responsible for the ingrained Mormon mindset. His ranch there is a bastion of independent creative thought, much like many of the "Hollywood elite ranches" in rural Montana.

I don't pretend to understand the mormon church's busybodiness, but I think it's a mistake to think it all emanates from UT. LDS churches and temples are all over the world now, so there are plenty of them in CA to do their own dirtywork. The head prophet guy may be in SLC, but most of the money for those LDS yes-on-8 a-holes came from tithing collected from church families right there in calif. Of course, it's possible that killing the head would kill the snake, but that hasn't seemed to work for christianity as whole.

Sorry Fran, I don't want to sound like I'm defending UT. You know I'm not! I strongly support equality for everyone in every respect. It makes me very sad that Prop 8 passed in Calif, especially when I saw a map of the county-by-county vote. Even L.A. County voted yes! To me, that is just unbelieveable.

Hi DK~ I was hoping you'd stop by & weigh in on this conversation, seeing as you are in the very liberal Utah minority. Living proof that liberal progressives are in fact alive & well in Utah.

I think making alliances with like minded people is key to any movement's success. As you say, there are indeed pockets of progressives, who are of the non Morman variety - right there in Utah.

I tried to find out how many states in the US have now adopted bans on gay marriage & I *think* it is 30.

Oregon State has been through it. We've had on again off again, yes votes, allowed gay marriage, reversed, voted on repeatedly, umpteen lawsuits, and then finally got a domestic partnership in place. The lawsuits and instigation always comes from outside the state.

But domestic partnership is NOT the same as marriage and is not a true equal right. The guvmnt has no place telling people who can & can't get married- that is a slippery slope to start down.

So we've got to unite & press for equal rights.

Marriage is a civil right.

Churches are not part of the civil structure. They needn't be forced to marry people they don't want to marry. Neither should they be in a position to dictate or deny civil rights. Some churches will want to be part of marrying gay couples. Some won't.

I'm not a churchgoer, but I have watched with interest as congregations decide whether or not to be "inclusive," a euphemism for whether or not to welcome gay members.

This is all going to get more interesting. I have two close friends who are theologians, and they point out that the Bible mentions homosexuality twice. That's not very much, given the size and scope of the Bible. The friend who reads Latin, Hebrew and Greek says that the translations on homosexuality aren't even accurate from the original.

Hmmmmm.

Lulu: Yes! The more you know about the bible, the more you know many parts were omitted and or tweaked.

These so called religious groups try to distort biblical text to fit their agenda.

I'm all for the separation of Church & Hate!

The Sundance Film Festival boycott is underway.

Alan Stock, CEO of the Cinemark theater chain, contributed $9,999 towards Yes on Prop 8.

This forces Sundance to face a direct challenge: Cinemark owns the Holiday Village Cinemas, one of the only real movie theater venues where films are screened during the festival.

Bloggers and activists are now demanding that Sundance to take a stand against the CEO’s significant contributions, and not hold screenings at the venue.

The other option is to move the film festival to Colorado, Canada, or even California. This isn't terribly complicated and the ball is now in Sundance's court.
